Think Locally, Act Googlely

Local search is booming, period.A few years ago we didn’t really go to the web to find brick and mortar businesses, but WE DO NOW. With searches like “restaurant Nix Boatyard in St. Augustine” actually delivers in the first spot, my favorite restaurant in St. Augustine Florida - The Creekside Dinery, but sometimes the name just escapes me.

I know that it has happened to you, too. Is there a time that you just couldn’t remember the business name, or perhaps you didn’t know the business name, but you are searching for a business type in a very specific area of your town? Guess what? Your potential customers ARE doing the same thing, too.

Let’s take that one step further, Jacksonville Florida is a large city, in fact the largest city in land area in the contiguous United States. We don’t have tiny towns one next to another like in many other parts of the U.S. We really don’t even have “suburbs” as much anymore. Verbally it is often referred to as the Metro Jacksonville Area or the First Coast made up of 5 counties. Well if you haven’t visited us before our First Coast is nearly 70 miles from the North to the South and 50 miles from the East to the West. Bottom line — it’s HUGE.

For special occasions I will make the 47 mile trek to St. Augustine to enjoy an Oak Plank Oven Grilled Steak at The Creekside Dinery in St. Augustine, but that is not my usual place to eat - and I bet your customers are the same way.

Years ago I served time (read: held a job) in the marketing department for a commercial real estate firm and learned some pretty interesting facts. Most traditional retail business measure the demographics in 1, 3, and 5 mile radius loops around their location. Small retailers (including restaurants) will draw the majority of their customers from people who work and live within that range. Big box retailers and national restaurant franchises draw from a larger area, however a concentration of their business is still very likely within a 10 mile radius. That’s probably no surprise to you - but did you tell your web designer?

When you are laying out your website, do you include neighborhoods, towns, nearby places to be included? If not you may be missing the boat. If you have a mobile business, is your service area limited to a section of town? Include that on your website.

Help your customers find you when they are looking by including “clues.” The search “italian restaurant jacksonville, fl” turns very different results than “italian restaurant san marco jacksonville, fl” even on the Google map. In the past I have discussed the idea that you can include a ZIP code in the Google search and get VERY TARGETED results.

Some creative ways to include neighborhood information:

On your Find Us page include directions from nearby areas where you may attract business. In Jacksonville it may be:

  • From Jacksonville Beach …
  • From Atlantic Beach …
  • From Arlington …
  • From Orange Park..

Or how about including a nearby thoroughfare or large neighborhood?

  • Conveniently located near Queens Harbor Country Club just off Beach Blvd

What about the nearby towns - this is especially great when you have many small townships close together

  • Proudly serving our customers in Green Cove Springs, Penny Farms and Middleburg for more than 20 years.

And this isn’t just for RESTAURANTS, either. It can work for the Hardware Store, the Florist or any other kind of brick and mortar business that attracts customers to their location. And even mobile businesses that work a specific area:

  • Our mobile detailers serve Downtown Jacksonville, The Southbank and San Marco

Even for me, in SEO consulting, I am not actually limited to a geographic area, but certainly clients really like that I am nearby and I will be working harder to let folks know that I am available in the small towns around Jacksonville, too. If you search Google for SEO Orange Park (which is the next closest town) we show up in the Google Local Results - not because our office is in Orange Park (yet) but because no other SEO companies are in the Google Local listings with addresses in Orange Park.

Google Local results are really local — unless you are geographically close to me, the results you see typing in SEO Orange Park are not the same results I see - not on the Google Map and not on the Organic SERPS and not in the Pay Per Click. Yes, even Pay Per Click can be localized. (More on that later).

If you do not have enough customers beating down the door to your local business (and are there really ever enough?) you really should think about how you can leverage the Google Local and Google Map to draw more traffic in. And oh, by the way, Yahoo and MSN have local search now, too. So don’t forget them as part of your efforts.

I purchased this online quick training on how to get your business on the Google Map in 4 hours. The information is solid, the presentation could be laid out better, and I will be updating my next client listings  based on several tips in the training.

How do you know if you need a “Local” presence for your website, here is a really simple test.

  • Are the products and services you provide useful or usable for customers in your area?
  • Do you have a cash register / service log to ring up walk-in transactions?
  • Do you deliver, install, or provide mobile service customers in your area?

If you answered yes to any or all of these questions. You may want to seriously consider making your website more “Local”

What companies may not benefit from “Local” … Companies that don’t offer any walk in services and never have direct in-person contact with clients may not need Local. For instance Amazon.com - they serve an international office and don’t need local visitors.

What about B2B? Well you probably do still need to think about local. While you are selling to a Business, it is still a person that is researching to find the products and services you offer.

The old saying seems most appropriate now … Think Globally - Act Locally.

Will Video Work For Business?

Have you considered what video could do for your business? In what ways could you adapt the use of video to promote your business? Equipment for recording web quality video is affordable and with sites like UStream and Mogulus you can even stream live video for free.

I have a few suggestions for ways you could use video on the web:

Message from the owner

Tour of your showroom

Individual product videos

Weekly video newsletters

Frequently asked question replies

Product instructions

Behind the scenes look at your business

Video Coupon

Video Deal of the Week

So how do you set that up?

Lights

If you are not able to shoot video in a well lighted, evenly lit area, you may need some form of lighting. If you are planning ongoing videos, thinking about investing in some good softbox lights, or some basic spotlights with a light diffusion to reduce the hard light. In our studios we use Pro Lighting Soft Boxes similar to these.

Looking for something cheaper and portable check out my video about Cheap Video Lighting for when I take the show on the road - hat tip to Sherman Hu for the portable gear tips.

Camera

For live video streaming you’ll need a camera that can hook up to your computer and a high speed internet connection. For uploaded videos, Web Video Cameras something like the Flip Video Camera or the upcoming Kodak Zi6 HD Pocket Video Camera.

Action

Set up a nice background and go ahead and make Mom proud and by cleaning off your desk.

Set the script - or at least an outline of what you want to present.

Practice a few times . . . on short videos, it’s much easier to redo it a few times to get it right than to learn video editing.

Once its recorded, be sure to upload it to several video websites and make sure you have a link back to your website in the description area. (And some great SEO friendly terms in the Name and Description, too).

Can it be that simple? Sure. We are currently testing live broadcasts weekly for our Retail Websites and posting the videos on their own Video Blog at www.CoolShoppingIdeas.com. And last week, we actually took our video equipment over to Wardrobe Therapy - a designer fashion boutique on Jacksonville’s Southside and worked with them to set up their first Fashion Makeover Web Show.

Think you’re ready for the next level? If you need help, we offer web video studio services and consulting to help businesses with different levels of web marketing.

Web Video is affordable and can drive new business to your business, when is the best time to get started?

Think Globally - Search Locally

As Google continues to be a more dominant force in search, they’ve further and further expanded their abilities to make this worldwide search be very local. Did you know that, right now, you can actually go to Google and type in the type of service that you’re looking for right where you live?

Maybe you need a car repair. You can type in “car repair” and the zip code that you live in, and Google will return to you businesses on the Google map that are within that zip code. So, just for fun, you ought to type in something you’re looking to buy, and put in the zip code of the area you’d like it to be in. Now, it’s not a perfect search, but it certainly does help.

Another way that you can do it is that instead of going to www.google.com and typing in a zip code and the service you want, you can go to local.google.com. Perhaps, you are looking for a restaurant or a pizza parlor. You can put in “restaurant near San Antonio,” and Google Local Search will actually go and look for restaurants that have San Antonio nearby. Or, just the opposite, Google goes and looks in San Antonio for restaurants that are nearby.

The COOLEST PART?  The business does not need to have a website to be listed in Google Local on the Google Maps.  (While I want everyone to have a website, this bears repeating) NO WEBSITE REQUIRED.

I’m continually amazed at the level of localness that you can get by searching the World Wide Web. Many of us still think that because it’s the World Wide Web that it doesn’t have a local flair, but that’s not true at all. So, the next time you’re looking for something that may just be around the corner, just head into your office, or open up your computer, and type in Google, your zip code and the service you’re looking for, and find out who in your area offers what you’re looking for. You may be surprised at how close they are, and how many things that you want are just outside your door, and you can find them by looking on the World Wide Web.

So, that also means that customers are looking for what you sell, and where you are in a Global way, to find you around the corner. Have you responded to the call? As of the time this blog post was written, Google Local inclusion on the Google Maps is still a free service. Not sure how to get your business listed in there? Here’s a quick video tutorial on getting your business in Google Local
Remember, you’re customers can’t find you if you’re not there.

Corporate Blogging

If your company has a need to interact or inform your prospects and clients, have you thought about starting a corporate blog?

No?

Why Not?

Some folks worry that they aren’t “good” enough to blog. Some folks don’t think they have anything to offer their readers. But really I bet you do.

When we first started our retail blog, we thought we would be stuck coming up with content for it, really we found one of the easiest things we could do was to turn it into a Frequently Asked Questions format that asks and answers a specific client question.

Here’s an actual blog post from our retail blog …

A Question from a customer looking for help to protect keys on the beach while he’s hunting for treasure on the beach.

I am looking for a waterproof case to hold 8 AA batteries for my metal detector. I am also looking to store in the same case my electronic key for my Toyota Prius. I have been using double zip lock baggies but fear some day they are going to leak leaving me without backup batteries or a way to start my car. Which size of your waterproof containers would you recommend to hold both items.Answer: That’s a great question! The
Aquapac Keymaster Waterproof Key Case is perfect for your needs. I tested it, at it will be just fine for your small stash of batteries and a key.

So I didn’t have to make anything up … nothing, really I just took the question and turned it into a “Dear Abby” style post. And the best thing? I wrote the post above 3 years ago and still get folks who find the blog post - not the website - and they come and make a purchase. So far so good right? Quick post that keeps on selling

I also have used it for Press Releases, Holiday Notes and even Newsletters.

What do you have to blog about today?

Is there a way you can use it to build your brand?

Can you promote your products?

Why not comment on the state of your industry?

Do you have an news item to share?

The options are endless in how to create content for your blog posts. Not sure how to implement a blog into your web marketing strategy? We offer marketing strategies and can recommend great blog designers, too. Just contact us for more details.

Where does website traffic come from?

Attracting Humans to Your Website

When a human visits your website they are there from one of only a few traffic sources. If you have a method that doesn’t fit in this group, I’d love to know. Some of these ways are more effective for conversion, but all in all traffic is good, targeted traffic is even better. Take a look at the many different ways you can attract traffic to your website. Many of them are low cost or even FREE sources of traffic.

Human Referrals

Existing customers can tell others about your website, and they will, if you give them a reason to. If you do a fantastic job, they will want to tell their friends. But they will also tell them if you just ask them to. Restaurants have been doing this for years with phrases like: “If you like our restaurant please tell your friends, if not please tell us.”

Humans also will tell others when they see a “cool” story about you in the news or trusted source. They send emails, forward articles, and may even use Twitter to broadcast your site to their followers.

Paid Advertisements

There are a ton of paid opportunities to get traffic to your site – but you have to remember one simple thing– all your paid ads – print and electronic – need to include your web domain. (I cringe at the business cards I am handed each month that don’t include a website link). If you want to up your chances to get visitors, give them an incentive – coupon code, free quote, or even a premium gift.

What kind of paid ads are out there? You can advertise with Email Blast companies, use co-registration services, print advertising, billboards, magazines, news journals and more. Just remember when you are paying for traffic, the marketing needs to have ROI. Understand what your revenue and sales goals are, and measure, measure, measure the results.

News Sources

Getting press coverage is a great way to generate traffic to your site. Getting listed on sites like SlashDot, DailyCandy and Digg can drive a flood of traffic quickly, but it doesn’t mean it will drive lots of sales. Consistent news coverage is more likely to bring more buyers, than curiosity seekers popping around the web for trendy hot stories.

Don’t neglect offline news opportunities, too. Local news stations, business reporters, and beat journalists are always in search of a great story. Help them out.

Search Engine / Directories

Getting your website listed in the search engines is crucial, and will likely drive the highest traffic and sales. But getting listed doesn’t mean that you are ranked high for your keyword terms. Continue to refine your online marketing plan to take advantage of this free traffic source.

Website Links (non paid)

Getting listed on other “regular folks” websites, blogs, and bookmarks can drive traffic to your site, too. Responding to great blog posts by adding value to the conversation is just one way to get listed on someone else’s blog. Delicious, Technorati and similar sites are great ways to get your site picked up and posted on lots of other websites.

The great news is you don’t have to be stuck with just one way to get traffic, and in each category there are truly dozens if not hundreds of ways you can get your website out there and get clicks into your website. Put your thinking cap on, and I welcome your comments with other great ideas here.
